82 spiders

Spider 82/100

The legs on this spider are made from beads that a friend bought me back from Egypt about 20years ago. I love the colour of them so had carried them around for all that time.

The whole family of spiders will be on show at the 100 day event the weekend of Sept 14th/15th in Auckland. The event will be at the Nathan Room, 51 Galway St, Britomart. The opening is Sat night and then the exhibition is open till 4 on the Sunday.

Liberated Quilts and Spider 80/100

I have just had a book from the library called Liberated Quiltmaking II by Gwen Marston. I met Gwen when I was teaching in Taupo and she was just fantastic. A really lovely person and very inspirational quilt maker. Over the last couple of evenings I have been playing with some of the ideas from the book. Using up scraps, which is always a good thing! I have pinned this small quilt up in the studio, not sure if it finished yet so I will look at it for a few days.

Spiders are taking over the studio

Spider 77/100

A while ago a found out about a company in the USA called Spoonflower, that will print any image you send them onto fabric. So when a had stitched a large enough family of spiders I took a photo and had a play. The resulting fabric arrived the other day. Its fantastic, and only 4m of the fabric is in the world, how cool is that! I am going to make a pair of jeans and then who knows what will happen to the rest. I have an idea to stitch more spiders on top of printed photographed spiders. The best part is that it looks like a photograph but feels like fabric.

Spider 76/100 and some drawing

Spider 76/100

I had my 2nd life drawing class today. Its just great. We were doing fast 5mins sketches so I didn't have time to get involved in the detail which is what I normally do. I feel as if I might be getting somewhere! I just need to practice everyday, maybe when the spiders are finished I will use that time to draw.

I found this broken zip on our walk to school yesterday and thought it would make a cool spider body. The legs are some old, tarnished silver pearl purl. Very Stream Punk, Kit will love it.

Spider 68

Spider 68/100

This spider is made from a broken pearl necklace that once belonged to my Nan.

This drawing is the start of a new quilt. He will be a Green Man, with a modern twist! I will choose the fabrics this week and get it started. It is for an exhibition in Oz, deadline is Jan so I have plenty of time. I will not be able to show the quilt once it is done until the exhibition has opened, that's if he gets selected!

Tomorrow I am starting a 6 week life drawing class. It has been so long since I had the chance to do some life drawing, I can't wait.

Spider 66/100

Seems the 100 day website is having some technical issues so this is the only place my spiders will be until that's sorted. I have to roll my frame out again today, will be the last time. This piece of work is going to be pretty big!

Stitching a spider without stitching a spider. Not sure the legs came out quite right. May try this idea again in a few days and get the legs better.

I think my spiders are starting to take over. This one is huge, so much for keeping inside the tack line! Tomorrow I will go back to small ones.

Spider 60/100 and White Gloves

Spider 60/100

We are getting ready for a quilt show this weekend. Putting hanging sleeves on quilts and washing the white gloves. Road to Colour is a quilt show that celebrates colour. All the quilts are made by the customers of All Things Patchwork, and they are all fantastic.

Road to Colour is at Waimauku school hall, North/west of Auckland on Sat 10th Aug from 10 - 5
All the proceeds will go to Muriwai Surf club which is our local surf beach and the club do a great job keeping the swimmers and surfers safe. I will be there all day so if you are reading this from within the Auckland area do come and say Hi.
